Since 1986, The New Harmony Project has served as a wellspring of creativity, elevating writers and artists whose stories grapple with and interrogate the complexity of hope. Since our first “project” in 1987, we have invited hundreds of writers to gather in New Harmony, Indiana, a place perfect for reflecting, renewing, and finding inspiration. By providing a community of care for writers and artists, they are free to devote unencumbered energy and focus toward their personal creative process of developing work that, in its best form, can ultimately make the world a better place. 2025

The 2025 Annual Writers’ Residency brought together 25 writers, who were joined by collaborators, dramaturgs, NHP staff and interns. This cohort of artists also featured writers selected in partnership with Court Theatre, Indiana Repertory Theatre, The Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival, and Thrown Stone Productions.

The cohort of artists featured writers selected in partnership with Congo Square Theatre, Indianapolis Shakespeare Company, The Kennedy Center College Theatre Festival, and Mosaic Theatre Company.

2023

The 2023 conference featured 19 Writers in Residence who were joined by collaborators, resident dramaturgs, NHP staff, and student fellows. The cohort of artists featured writers selected in partnership with Steppenwolf Theatre Company, the Kennedy Center College Theatre Festival, and Indianapolis Shakespeare Company. Production in Residence scripts
will be seen at Baltimore Center Stage, Mosaic Theatre Company, Seattle Children's Theatre, the Alliance Theatre, and Rivendell Theatre Ensemble. 

2022

The 2022 conference featured 21 “Writers in Residence” who were joined by collaborators, resident dramaturgs, NHP Staff, and student fellows. The cohort of artists featured writers selected in partnership with Steppenwolf Theatre Company and the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

2021

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 conference featured two cohorts of “Writers in Residence” for one week periods. The conference featured partnerships with Steppenwolf Theatre Company & The Edgerton New Play Foundation, The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, and Cygnet Theatre & Playwrights’ Center.

2020

The 2020 conference was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and selected writers were shifted to 2021.
