It was no accident The Project was founded in the town of New Harmony, Indiana.  From 1814-1824, the original settlers, the Harmonie Society, built a flourishing self-sufficient community.  In 1824, the renowned social reformer Robert Owen purchased the town.  He gathered scholars, scientists, artists, and educators and brought them to New Harmony to create a social and cultural utopia in the Midwest.

It is that same spirit which helps guide The New Harmony Project to bring together writers, directors, dramaturgs, filmmakers, and actors from around the country.  Participants gather each spring to create a nurturing environment for writers - a setting free from the restrictive pressures of the commercial world.

The beauty of New Harmony lends a peaceful tranquility to the living and work environment of the writers.  Living quarters, meals, rehearsals, readings, and creative discourse is centered within the Conference Center of the New Harmony Inn.  The quaint community provides lush gardens and stunning sculptures that allow for intellectual stimulation and spiritual renewal.
